Our TEEN READING PROGRAM also kicks off on the 1st of June.  Teens will also have reading logs, but will set a reading goal for them based on the number of PAGES they plan to read over the summer.  Teens will meet Thursday afternoons for the following Programs:

June 7th, 2:00 p.m. TRAVELIN’ MUSIC!  Music about Oklahoma, from Oklahoma, or written and/or performed by Oklahomans

June 14th 2:00 p.m. PLAYIN GAMES!  It’s game day!  Deal or No Deal! Who Am I? Are you smarter than the librarian?  You’ll have to join us to find out!

June 21st 2:30 p.m.  WORDS ON THE WIND! Rep. Lisa Billy will perform as Molly Gunn-a Chickasaw elder who walked the trail of tears. She has performed this as apart of the traveling Chautauqua. It is also on permanent display in the state of Mississippi Museum in Jackson

June 26th 2:00 p.m. TEEN MOVIE DAY!  We’ll watch the 20th Century Fox film “WINDTALKERS” Staring Nicholas Cage and Adam Beach.  It’s an exciting adventure story of Sgt. Joe Enders and the young Navajo Code Talker, Ben Yahzee who he guards during the Battle of Saipan.  The Native American Code Talkers were this country’s most powerful secret during WWII because their code was never broken during that war.  This is about the best movie I’ve found on this subject, however, this movie is rated “R” for Graphic War Violence and Language.   Because of our library’s commitment to our parents and to the kids in our program, this rating requires that NO TEEN READER WILL BE PERMITTED TO ATTEND THIS VIEWING WITHOUT WRITTEN PARENTAL PERMISSION!!!  No exceptions. No excuses.  No arguments. (I have seen the movie and can say that it is less violent than Saving Private Ryan…but I’d have to insist on written permission to show that as well.)

July 5th 2:00 p.m.  OKLAHOMA AUTHORS!  We’ll learn about great authors who are from Oklahoma and the best seller’s they’ve written.  Let’s see how many YOU can name!

July 12th 2:00 p.m.  ROAD TRIPPIN’.  This program is still in development.  It will either feature Rt. 66 OR will be a field trip…. I’ll be working with parents to organize something special either way!

July 19th 2:00 p.m.  RED CARPET OKIES.  How many Okies do YOU know that have won Oscars or Tony’s or Grammy’s?  Games and activities about Oklahoma’s best and brightest stars.

July 26th 2:00 p.m.  TEEN MOVIE DAY!  Ok, folks, I’m needing a little help here….What I’d LIKE to do is feature one of my favorite Oklahoma Authors for Young People, S. E. Hinton.  So if any of you can help me find a copy of “The Outsiders”  (c 1983 staring Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell, Patrick Swayze, Rob Low, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise), based on S. E. Hinton’s novel of the same name, I’d really love to share that with out Teen Readers.  If not, I guess we can simply spend another “Night at the Museum!”

July 31st the program ends and Teens must turn in their logs.  On Thursday, Aug. 2nd at 6:00 p.m. we’ll have a Teen Summer Reading Party for all the readers who’ve met their reading goals!

BECOME A LIBRARY VOLUNTEER Volunteers help in many ways by supporting staff for children's and adult programming, planning and organizing fundraisers & events, and helping out with various tasks around the library.

TEEN VOLUNTEERS Teen volunteers may begin volunteering as early as the summer after their 6th grade year.  It is customary to "break in" new volunteers by having them help with the Summer Reading Program.  "SRP" volunteers may help with creating and performing in story times, working with children on arts and crafts projects, learning to assist patrons at the circulation desk, shelving, and basic library skills.  Teen volunteers have been rewarded in the past for their efforts with pool parties, library lock-ins, Library pins or "dog-tags", but mostly by a sense of satisfaction in a job well done and a summer well spent.
